The International Automobile Federation (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, FIA) continues to take steps to shift major motorsport categories towards electric mobility. The fundamental objective is to protect the environment and promote sustainability.
This time, it is the World Rally Championship, which had already made changes with the inclusion of hybrid prototypes and will now introduce a “green” fuel for its vehicles from next season.
To make this possible, the FIA entered into an alliance with the company P1 Racing Fuels, which will be in charge of supplying gasoline free of fossil hydrocarbons, mixed with synthetic components and biofuels.

The governing body of world motorsports reported that the Irish-based company was chosen for offering the best global offer on key factors, including the cost per liter for competitors and the percentage of sustainable elements present in the new fuel.
Although other championships such as the Porsche Supercup are already working on the entry of this style of fuel, the Rally will be one of the pioneers in terms of competitions affiliated with the International Federation of Motorsports.
The commitment of the governing body and competition
Joan Siebel, World Rally Championship Manager, said “The technology behind sustainable fuels is changing rapidly. Therefore, a lot of effort has been put into finding the best available solution and we can be proud of the result.”
“The chosen combination of advanced biofuel and innovative e-fuel components make the Rally the real leader in the world of motorsport. The tournament is a tremendous platform to develop and validate this type of fuel in production vehicles, on real roads and in all kinds of circumstances. What we learn from it in the stages of the championship can benefit road car users around the world,” he added.
For his part, the president of the FIA, Jean Todt, stressed that the organization “is strongly committed to leading motor sport and mobility towards a low-carbon future.”
“By introducing sustainable fuel alongside hybrid technology in rallying, we are taking a significant step into the new era of the World Championship in 2022,” he stated.

“The environment is a key pillar of the FIA Purpose Driven movement. Together with our energy partners, we will continue to combine the best technological and environmental commitment,” said Todt.
This measure seeks in the first place a reduction in net CO2 emissions, maintaining the performance that vehicles would have with the use of a high-octane gasoline for competition. However, a rise in the price of fuel is expected, although the FIA itself acknowledges that it will try to achieve “the closest possible price to the current fuel.”
