Di Grassi pressures Formula 1 to apply e-fuels

Lucas di Grassi, one of the leading promoters of sustainability in motorsports, asks Formula 1 to consider introducing sustainable fuels in the immediate future. The Brazilian believes that it is the path that sport should follow and recalls that sustainability goes beyond planting trees.

F1 looks to the future and wants to run with synthetic fuels or e-fuels from 2023. The goal for 2021 is to start working to have a zero-carbon footprint by 2030. Di Grassi has asked the highest category of motorsport to speed up this process to introduce the e-fuel as soon as possible.

About e-fuel

It is a new fuel that does not generate CO2 emissions and that arises as an alternative to traditional fossil fuel. It is made from hydrogen in water and CO2 captured from the air through an electrolysis process with renewable energy.

The Brazilian Formula E driver, a great social media activist on these issues, justifies his proposal with the statement that “hybrids will be finished soon” and discards electric batteries: “They are from Formula E”.

Therefore, Di Grassi insists that it is the path that Formula 1 must consider, as fighting for sustainability is not only about planting trees or advertising campaigns.

“This is the right sustainability for F1. Not the green wash that we see today with tree planting and any advertising to be sustainable. Spend the money and ingenuity to get green, clean and sustainable fuels,” added the representative of the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team.

The FIA created a 100% sustainable fuel for the Formula 1 of the future. However, it will not be mandatory until 2026, when the new generation of engines arrives.
