Formula E will continue to experiment and test recharging during the first practice sessions of the Sao Paulo and Tokyo ePrix during the days scheduled for this March.

According to a report by Soy Motor, the electric category continues to apply fast energy charges during pit stops before their introduction in the races, scheduled for mid-April in Misano.

The pit stop, estimated at a minimum of 34 seconds by DS Penske, will be to perform a quick battery charge around the halfway point of the race, which will add extra ‘spice’ from a strategy standpoint.

The Drivers’ View

Edoardo Mortara has shown rejection on the subject, as he recalls all the times that the introduction of recharging has been delayed. In 2023 it was not run this way at any time despite being in Formula E’s plans. Now, the tests to be carried out in Sao Paulo and Tokyo look set to be momentous.

“We’ve done a few practice recharges, but we haven’t used them too well. I’d rather not say anything about their introduction, because it looked like they were going to arrive in Mexico last year, but it’s kept getting postponed,” the driver told The Race.

“I don’t know when we’re going to get them, if we’re going to get them. It’s a matter of being prepared and the team, in terms of development, is,” added the talented racer.

Formula E set Misano as the circuit at which this new racing format with refuels would debut. The return of pit stops is scheduled to take place at one race at each of the circuits with double-headers.

In that sense, in addition to the Italian circuit, new on the calendar this year, would be Berlin, Shanghai, Portland and London. With a view to Misano, Formula E has presented the circuit it will use for its two races there on April 13 and 14.

The electric category has opted to reduce the distance of the main straight and move the first braking a few meters forward. This modification forces the drivers to make an alternative route at the pit-lane exit and if we transfer it to the refueling, the loss of time in the pits during the race can be considerable.

For the moment, Formula E maintains the original idea of debuting the recharges in Misano and hence the two more experiments they want to carry out in Sao Paulo and Tokyo.
