The city of Berlin can already be considered the temple of Formula E. The German capital is the only venue to have hosted races in every season of the electric series since its founding in 2014.

The 2.4-kilometer Tempelhof Airport street circuit on the outskirts of the metropolis will hold the doubleheader this weekend April 22-23.

This is a unique challenge for teams and drivers, with the bumpy concrete apron, higher-than-usual degradation and high grip affecting energy management and making race strategies a headache, but the action is always among the best on the calendar.

How’s the Championship?

TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein leads the World Drivers’ Championship table from Saudi Arabia with 86 points. A double in Diriyah and a podium finish in Mexico City in the first six rounds put him at the top.

The Porsche 99X Electric has proven to be the benchmark package so far, with Wehrlein winning twice in the first three races and Jake Dennis, in the Avalanche Andretti, taking a win and two second-place finishes in Mexico City and Diriyah respectively.

The Briton is 24 points behind Wehrlein in second, and is under pressure from Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy, just one point back in third after three consecutive grandstand appearances, and double DS PENSKE champion Jean-Eric Vergne in fourth, just two points behind.

Jaguar’s I-TYPE 6 has looked just as powerful as the Porsche-powered cars since Hyderabad. Cassidy has led the charge for the Envision Racing customers, who sit just behind the German manufacturer in the standings, while the factory Jaguar TCS Racing team finally harnessed its race-winning pace and power management to a 1-3 result last time out in Sao Paulo.

Top Winners

Top drivers in the German contest include Sebastien Buemi with six podiums in Berlin and two victories, one of them at Alexanderplatz.

Antonio Felix da Costa is one of the three drivers with two wins at Tempelhof. The Porsche flag-bearer came at the end of season 6 when he used his advantage to take the title.

Lucas di Grassi also took top honors with Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler in 2019 and signed off Audi’s first stint in Formula E with another home win for the brand in Season 7. Reigning champion Vandoorne (DS PENSKE) took first place in the final race of Season 6 at Tempelhof.
