Porsche will continue to expand their battery research and establish their own network of charging stations, the company announced at the first Volkswagen Power Day.

Porsche is researching high-performance batteries with silicon anodes instead of graphite, with the aim of achieving even higher energy density and better fast-charging capabilities.

According to the brand’s publication, the new batteries will be manufactured in Europe and will initially be used in high-performance vehicles of limited production and for competition customers.

Porsche is also planning their own fast-charging stations along the main European highways and motorways. These stations will offer Porsche customers a high-quality, brand-appropriate charging experience, while complementing the existing Ionity network.

Innovative high-performance batteries with silicon anodes

Porsche is systematically advancing their research in the field of cell chemistry for high-performance batteries. To meet the extreme demands of cell systems in high performance applications, it is necessary to change cell chemistry from graphite anodes to silicon anodes.

The new electrolytes and additives allow operation even at temperatures above 75ºC. These innovative silicon-based high-performance batteries will initially be used in high-performance limited-production models and in customer competition vehicles.

However, the experience gained will also have a positive effect on the power and volume of the cells. In addition, Porsche will ensure the existence of a fully European production line for these high-performance batteries.

“The battery cell is the combustion chamber of tomorrow,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG.

“Our electrified high-performance sports and racing cars place the highest demands on battery technology. To meet these demands, Porsche needs special high-performance cells. Silicon has big potential.”

This is because it allows for higher energy density and improves energy recovery, as well as fast charging capability. Porsche has already taken a pioneering technological role in the development of 800-volt technology, first in the 919 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and now in the Taycan electric sports car.

Porsche fast charging station project with rest areas

Porsche is defining their own fast charging points along the important European highways and motorways. These stations will offer customers a high-quality, brand-appropriate charging experience, while complementing the Ionity network. A unique design will distinguish Porsche stations from others and make them recognizable.

“An important prerequisite for electromobility is fast and convenient charging,” says Blume. “That is why we are currently working on the details of a concept for our own fast-charging stations. We will select attractive locations for these in order to offer our customers the most comfortable and fastest long-distance travel experience possible.”

Blume explained that each station will have between six and twelve points with a capacity of 350 kW or more. The process will be easy and there will be a rest area with innovative self-service facilities. Access will be controlled through a smartphone.
