The Sao Paulo E-Prix more than fulfilled the expectations generated by the first race in the history of Formula E on Brazilian territory. There were 114 mind-blowing overtakes in just 35 laps that capped off a great celebration of motorsport.

Before Brazil, Jaguar‘s Mitch Evans had his best result by finishing seventh in Diriyah and despite winning in São Paulo, he still only occupies ninth place in the Drivers’ World Championship.

“I needed this win, to be honest – I needed a good result to get my season going. Things happen and we have to keep pushing forward. There are some really fast cars out there, obviously. The DS’ and now we’re starting to put pressure on Porsche who have been strong from the start – it’s really wide open,” said the Sao Paulo winner.

For his part, teammate Sam Bird took his second third place of Season 9 during the race weekend. The 2.933-kilometer street circuit provided the drivers with some interesting track surfaces to overtake rivals. From potholes to different types of concrete were some of the track conditions the racers had to deal with.

Several drivers had great performances during the Brazilian race, but definitely stands out the TAG Heuer Porsche of Pascal Wehrlein, by overtaking 11 places.

The championship leader finished in seventh place, but put on a great show with the comeback he made from his grid start. The TCS Racing Jaguar of Sam Bird also amazed the fans after starting in tenth place and finishing on the podium.

Accidents

Other drivers were not as fortunate to be at the front of the field. For example, Norman Nato was out after just the first lap after a collision with the NEOM McLaren duo.

One of the most affected was Jake Dennis of Avalanche Andretti, when he was hit by Dan Ticktum’s NIO 333, but he still retains second place in the Drivers’ World Championship.

Formula E moves to Europe for the doubleheader on April 22-23 at the iconic Berlin E-prix.
