100 Races and Top 10: Buemi Starts the Gen3 Era on the Right Foot

After two seasons to forget, Sebastien Buemi is proving why his name is inscribed among the historic champions of Formula E, by lifting the scepter in season 2.

In the three races so far in the Gen3 era, the driver has placed among the first six on the grid with great pace and control of a car that is still new for all teams.

Buemi made his 99th race start from Julius Baer Pole Position in race one. Envision Racing’s I-TYPE 6 proved to be one of the best single-seaters of the weekend in Diriyah, second only to Porsche.

“I was lucky in the final corner where Hughes lost control and his car went out, which meant I could pass Mitch (Evans) at the line.” “I feel like we’re getting stronger and now we can regroup and look ahead to India, we’re getting better and better,” Buemi told the official Formula E website.

Buemi’s teammate Nick Cassidy also came in the top 10, which represented a feel-good weekend for Envision. “It’s very early in the Gen 3 era and it’s important to understand what works and what doesn’t work with the car,” said Team Principal Sylvain Filippi.

Standout Numbers

Diriyah saw Buemi, Jean-Eric Vergne (DS PENSKE) and Sam Bird (Jaguar TCS Racing) join Lucas di Grassi as the only drivers to reach 100 races in the electric single-seater series.

In qualifying for Round 2, Buemi took his first Julius Baer Pole Position since New York City in Season 5, and his first front row start since Berlin in Season 6.

Now, the Envision representative equals Vergne for the total number of pole positions in Formula E (15) and holds the record for the most front row openings (22).

By being on the front row with Jake Hughes, the Swiss has now shared the start row with 16 different drivers in Formula E, which is a record within the competition.
