What goes on behind the scenes and the details and secrets of teams and drivers in the midst of the competition come to light with a never-before-seen Formula E documentary.

The electric single-seater series premieres “Unplugged,” focusing directly on Season 8 and the farewell to the Gen2  era.

The audiovisual gives viewers a glimpse into the paddock during the 2021/22 campaign: Formula E’s biggest campaign to date with 16 races in 10 iconic cities, including New York, Jakarta, London, Mexico City and Rome, where a new world champion was crowned in the final race.

End of an Era

Episode 1 sees the return of Formula E for Season 8 and the final year of the Gen2 race car. Then world champion driver Nyck de Vries returned to the paddock confident to defend his title, while his teammate, Stoffel Vandoorne set out to prove he is not number two.

Entering their final season in Formula E and with Mercedes-EQ’s reputation as a hugely dominant force in motorsport, both drivers were under pressure.

Viewers will be able to watch through Formula E’s network of broadcast partners on TV and on-demand digital channels. Regional premieres are scheduled in Europe, Southeast Asia and New Zealand starting this week.

Other regions will also make the documentary available in the coming days, while it will be available on digital platforms from March 2023.

Ticktum in the Spotlight

One of the most important personalities in the Unplugged series is NIO 333 Racing Formula E team driver Dan Ticktum. The 23-year-old Briton features heavily and episode 4 shows Dan as one of the three rookies in season 8, who joined the series after his stint in the junior F1 categories.

This earned Tictum a reputation as a maverick on the track, but he believes he has matured in his first year in Formula E, although he remains outspoken and fiercely competitive.

“My character is often misunderstood, and I’ve definitely been painted as a villain before,” Ticktum said. “I opened up a little more as a person in this series, and I think it’s important for drivers and athletes in general to be themselves, and authentically show who they really are.”

For the driver, the documentary presents a realistic picture of life inside the paddock and helps fans understand more about what motivates them and their origins in motorsports.
