On its debut season, which also coincides with the premiere of Formula E’s ambitious Gen3 era, NEOM McLaren completed its 2023 driver lineup. Jake Hughes was chosen by the iconic brand to start alongside René Rast in the electric series.

The racer has more than 10 years of single-seater experience in BRDC Formula 4, where he became its inaugural champion, Formula Renault and eventually graduated to Formula 2 in 2022, earning several achievements during his Formula 3 transitions.

Along with his Formula 2 campaign, Hughes took on the role of development and reserve driver with Mercedes-EQ, contributing to title-winning campaigns. Hughes will now graduate to a race seat in the team as he begins his Gen3 effort under the McLaren banner.

Golden Opportunity

Hughes thanked McLaren for having confidence in his skills heading into season 9 of the electrified circuit. “I am very proud and feel privileged to be part of the McLaren Racing family, having the opportunity to represent such a prestigious brand,” he said.

He revealed that during his childhood, the team was a fundamental part of his inspiration to start racing. “Representing the team in Formula E feels amazing. Obviously, I’ve been before in a different way and we’ve already achieved excellent results. It’s good to have that relationship and I know what’s expected of me.”

“Coming at a time when a new generation car is being introduced to the series excites me. It feels like a good opportunity and chance, especially being a rookie in season 9. It’s going to be a great year and I can’t wait to start the journey ahead!” added Hughes.

For his part, Ian James, the team’s Managing Director, assured that they have been working tirelessly to retain their top talent, with the aim of achieving satisfactory results.

“It looks like today’s announcement will be a long time coming,” said James. “Since May this year, when we first announced McLaren Racing’s entry into Formula E, we have been working hard to create the best possible team and structure for sustainable success,” he said.
