Alexander Sims’ days in Formula E are numbered. And it has been the driver himself who expressed his desire to leave the electric single-seater series due to poor results.

The British driver has only accumulated two points this season and despite having offers from other teams, he has preferred to step aside and visualize new horizons in his career in motorsport.

Speaking to The Race, Sims pointed out that his latest appearances on street circuits have been really complicated, which has made him rethink many things in his career. “Nobody likes to be less competitive than they’d like to be, and there’s no answer as to why. That’s the main thing for me.”

Paradoxically in Berlin, an appointment where the Mahindra driver conquered the only units in the table, frustration was present as he did not understand the reasons why the car performed so well and yet was clearly outperformed by other competitors.

“The car felt good that day, but we couldn’t understand why. This is my biggest problem. I don’t know what to try with the car, because even when we are fast, we don’t see much difference in the data, we can’t understand what gives me that feeling,” he detailed.

Next Steps

After revealing his intentions to leave the electric category, Sims seems to be clear that his future lies in endurance racing, as he admitted difficulties with the Formula E format, which has a considerably shorter time.

“I think it’s just the single-seater format, especially in Formula E, with very little driving time, high pressure, very competitive environment, which is great, because when you do well, you feel like you’ve won. But it’s not 100% me. Endurance is a better place for me personally,” he noted.

Sims acknowledged that, despite making the decision, he has a strange feeling about leaving a series that is growing and attracting more and more big-name drivers, as well as breaking ratings records.

“It’s an incredible category, but at the end of the day, it’s the day job. It’s the work you do day in and day out and the sense of pleasure you get from it. Like I said, I get along with everyone on the team. I never had any problems with them. It’s the race format, it doesn’t work for me,” he concluded.
