Berlin E-Prix Arrives with Great Challenges for Formula E Drivers

After the Monaco stop, Formula E continues its tour through Europe, and this weekend lands in Berlin, one of the category’s most iconic venues since its inaugural season in 2014.

Mercedes driver Stoffel Vandoorne leads the championship after his dominance in the Principality, but things are very close in the standings with only 10 points separating him from his closest pursuers Jean-Eric Vergne (DS TECHEETAH), Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) and Robin Frijns (Envision Racing).

Vandoorne took the reins of the tournament after withstanding the pressure of Evans and Vergne, who closed the podium. The leader has already tasted the sweetness of victory in Tempelhof, where the German event will be held and, undoubtedly, he will be the great favorite to repeat in this round.

On the other hand, ROKIT Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara had been leading the table on his way to Rome, but a couple of retirements in rounds 5 and 6 have lowered his aspirations. The season 7 runner-up will be hoping for better luck in Berlin, after a dramatic starting line collision with Evans in the final ended his title bid.

As with Mortara, the TAG Heuer Porsche pairing of Andre Lotterer and Pascal Wehrlein have been in the fight so far this season. They are sixth and seventh, respectively, having a lot of consistency. However, in Monaco they did not have it all their own way, as Wehrlein suffered a technical problem that forced him to retire from the race lead. Meanwhile, Lotterer was pushed into the wall at Turn 1.

Circuit Particularities

Two different configurations will be used in Berlin over the weekend. Saturday will be run using the traditional counterclockwise direction, and on Sunday switching to the right. This is a unique challenge for the teams and drivers.

The track also presents other challenges for the racers with a bumpy track, higher than usual degradation and high grip, which undoubtedly affect energy management and make race strategies a headache.

Itinerary of the days

Saturday’s action starts with free practice from 07:15 local time, with qualifying at 10:40 and Round 7 from 15:00 CET.

Free practice before Round 8 starts at the same time on Sunday, with qualifying also at 10:40 and the race again at 15:00.

Formula E will make all of its digital channels available for viewers to enjoy the races this weekend.
