While it is true that Formula E wanted to leave a wider time margin to introduce the third generation (Gen3) car, scheduled to debut in season 9, the pressures and expectations focused on this technology have changed the electric single-seater series’ plans.

On April 28, this jewel will be unveiled to the world with the aim of revolutionizing the tournament, which is gaining more and more centimeters and is already consolidated as a World Championship of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

The Gen3 car will be introduced to manufacturers, teams, drivers, partners and other VIP guests at an evening event in the principality, while fans will be able to watch the historic event through the digital channels that broadcast the competition.

Vehicle Qualities

According to category promoters, it will be the first Formula E car aligned with Life Cycle Thinking, with a second life designed for tires, broken parts and battery cells. In addition, the Gen3 will be net zero carbon, reinforcing the series’ sustainable status.

It features an electric motor delivering up to 350kW of power (470BHP), capable of a top speed of 200 mph (320 km/h), with a power-to-weight ratio that is twice as efficient as an equivalent 470BHP internal combustion engine. Also, at least 40% of the energy used in a race will be produced by regenerative braking during the event.

Another important quality is that it will be the first Formula car with front and rear engines: a new front powertrain adds 250kW to the 350kW at the rear, more than doubling the regenerative capacity of the current Gen2 to a total of 600kW.

In addition, it will be the first Formula car not to feature rear hydraulic brakes due to the addition of the front powertrain and its regenerative capability.

A Key Step into the Future

According to Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E, the Gen3 racing single-seater represents a leap forward for motorsport and electric mobility.

“Designed to demonstrate that high performance, efficiency and sustainability can be combined without compromise, the Gen3 car is our most powerful, lightest and fastest race car to date. We look forward to finally taking the covers off the Gen3 in Monaco, a place steeped in motorsport history, and seeing the car light up the streets of cities around the world next season.”

For his part, Alejandro Agag, Founder and President of Formula E, assured that the arrival of Gen3 is the latest momentous step in an incredible journey for the Championship.

“We have come a long way, as have electric vehicles, less than a decade. And we will not stop yet, as we bring together the leaders to imagine the possibilities of the future of all-electric single-seater motorsport,” he stressed.
