The world’s toughest solar car race, in which participants traverse 3,000 kilometers into the Australian outback, has been canceled due to border closures.

The “Bridgestone World Solar Challenge” is another of the victims of COVID-19, which has forced the postponement of countless sporting events.

With border closures preventing international teams from entering the event and forcing it to be canceled, organizers are planning virtual alternatives.

“Our event thrives on the optimism and ingenuity of the students who take part,” event director Chris Selwood said.

“The importance of refining electric vehicles and their associated technologies has never been greater – and we want to honour everyone working so diligently in pursuit of that goal.”

The competition consists of teams building a car that can travel through challenging terrain between Darwin and Adelaide, Australia, powered only by energy from the sun.

Awards are given for the first team to cross the finish line and the best off-roader in terms of performance, efficiency, design and practicality.

The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is now scheduled for October 2023.
