Cell Technology to Extend Range of Electric Vehicles Unveiled
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Linkedin

The path towards electric mobility worldwide has all companies from the technology sector working hard to contribute to the energy transition and environmental protection needed by the planet.

One of these firms is the Israeli company “StoreDot”, which announced a new patented innovation seeking to create self-repairing energy cells. This will allow them to be used on electric vehicles and can be repaired on the background.

As a benefit of this development, the lifetime of the batteries would be extended, and thus the performance of vehicles using electricity to move could be improved.

How is it set up?

According to StoreDot, the system involves battery temperature detection sensors and management software. This software would identify through a series of algorithms the cell, or group of cells, performing below the indicators, so it will temporarily deactivate them to recondition.

During the repair process, drivers should experience no problems or interruptions in power flow, nor any decrease in performance.

In addition to improved performance, the company’s engineers explain, there would be a decrease in risk, as avoiding overheating would reduce the threat of thermal runaway that can cause fires.

Doron Myesdorf, CEO of StoreDot stressed that this approach is truly transformative with huge real-world benefits for electric vehicle owners, improving the performance, safety and longevity of their vehicles.

He said it also plays a crucial role on eradicating range anxiety, which remains the main barrier to EV ownership.

Precisely, range is the existing fear in the driving community that such a vehicle will not have enough energy storage to cover the necessary distance, and therefore be stranded in the middle of the road.

The patent called ”Recovery of defective branches and/or cells of battery packs by deep discharging” is already approved, and the company is engaged into advanced discussions with major electric vehicle manufacturers to bring this idea to fruition.

StoreDot has developed a booster technology that will allow the power cells to receive a higher current charge, which would provide much faster charging times than today.
