Vitesco Presents New Engine at the International Electric Vehicle Symposium

More and more important innovation spaces are opening up, in which technology companies introduce their technologies to be applied in favor of sustainable mobility. In this sense, this week the thirty-fifth International Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS) was held in Oslo, Norway, where the company Vitesco presented a machine that could make an important contribution to the electrification of vehicles.

It is a new externally excited synchronous electric motor, i.e. it does not require permanent magnets in its rotor. In this case, the manufacturer has optimized the software of this machine to adapt it to long distances where electric vehicles need to reach high speeds.

Its greatest advantage is its efficiency, 15% higher than that of asynchronous induction motors, reaching a higher density of available power, both gravimetric (kW / kg) and volumetric (kW / l). Their disadvantage is that including such scarce and unavailable materials makes them more expensive to manufacture.

In externally excited synchronous motors (EESM) instead of permanent magnets an external excitation is used, consisting of a power supply and an inverter. The magnetic field of the rotor is generated by slip rings and brushes that do not require maintenance and do not cause sparks. Their advantage is that they allow to control the power of the magnet created in the rotor and therefore the torque requirements at each moment, which makes them more efficient.

In addition to their high efficiency at high speeds, they also significantly reduce costs by dispensing with magnets in the motor, whose purchase prices are currently at the highest levels in the last 10 years.

Products to Boost Electromobility

Vitesco’s EESM technology joins the range of electrical systems already in its portfolio and includes drive shafts, drives, inverters and all associated power electronics.

At the EVS Symposium in Oslo, in addition to this integrated electric drive, Vitesco Technologies exhibited systems and solutions for greater efficiency in electric drive, including solutions for battery management, power electronics, thermal management, a high voltage enclosure and a master controller.

Thomas Stierle, Business Manager for Electrification Technology and Electronic Controls at Vitesco, emphasized that with this product portfolio, the company is focusing on global and scalable platforms for electric vehicles, which is where they see growth and where the potential for sustainable and more carbon neutral mobility lies.

The German company’s goal is to promote clean and sustainable mobility, making the core of each vehicle intelligent and electric.
