Uncertain future for da Costa and Vergne in Formula E due to Techeetah financial crisis

Uncertain future for da Costa and Vergne in Formula E due to Techeetah financial crisis

The progress that Formula E has made in seven seasons of competition excites not only its managers, but also drivers such as Antonio Félix da Costa and Jean-Eric Vergne have expressed their intention to remain driving in the electric series for much longer.

“I love Formula E at the moment. The race at the weekend was a lot of fun, I was having a lot of fun in the car and you’re fighting Le Mans winners, DTM champions, Formula E champions, former Formula 1 drivers,” said the Portuguese representing the DS Techeetah team at the end of the Puebla E-Prix.

However, not everything is rosy within the tournament, since it was known in recent days that Techeetah is facing serious financial problems that compromise not only the continuity of da Costa, but also the presence of the squad for the eight harvest.

It has emerged in the press that Sheng Li, the CEO behind the racing team owner, and an investor in Extreme E, is seeking a sponsor or possible sale of Techeetah. The organization, despite its difficult situation, may be close to securing a major new sponsor to alleviate the problem.

“The quality on this grill is just unreal. And I love it. My plan is to be here and help this championship continue to grow, continue to be successful, be part of it, be part of the sustainability message,” said the Lusitanian, who warned that” if I am not here next year, it is because someone really failed. “

When asked about the status of his current contract, he replied, “maybe I will tell you the story at the end of the year because if I start now, I will never shut up and get in trouble.”

On a hypothetical exit from Formula E, da Costa expressed that “he would love to race in IndyCar, I am very curious to try one of these race experiences.” It should be noted that he has already flirted with this category by participating in an inaugural test of the series with Rahal Letterman Lanigan at Barber Motorsports Park last November.

Same sensations

On his part, Jean-Eric Vergne, Da Costa’s teammate, also expressed his low spirits regarding the secrecy that exists within Techeetah. “I don’t know if there will be a team next year. It’s not an easy situation,” he said.

“I have no idea at the moment,” replied the pilot about the immediate future of him. However, he highlighted about the franchise: “We are fantastic people, we work very hard to make sure we stay together next year. We all want to continue the story together, but it is a question to ask investors. It has been very difficult and I don’t know where we are going at the moment,” said Vergne.

Formula E will be back on the weekend of July 10-11 with the E-Prix in Brooklyn, New York.
