Despite the COVID-19 difficulties for organizing a sporting competition such as Formula E, Season Seven was a complete success, not only in terms of excitement with the definition of the champion during the last round, but also in high viewer levels.

Up to 316 million people watched the action of the electric series, which was 32% more than Season Six. As revealed by Liberty Global, one of the major shareholders of the category, for the first time in history, the vast majority of fans watched the races live rather than just highlights or replays.

“It’s clear that there is great interest from Formula E fans in cities,” said Jamier Riegle, CEO of Formula E. He stressed that they are very happy to see that the strategy of partnering with broadcasters committed to engaging and accessible coverage is paying off.

Countries with the Largest Viewership

Liberty Global detailed that the audience in Germany tripled, with a 338% growth, and free-to-air races; while in Brazil, there was a 286% increase. Similarly, in Great Britain, the rise was 156%, with two events in London.

New media partnerships in Germany with Seven. One, L’Equipe in France, Sky Sports Italia with Mediaset, TV Cultura and GloboTV in Brazil have produced record figures.

The company’s thematic sports channel Eurosport, meanwhile, secured the main role of providing coverage for the championship in more than fifty markets.

“Formula E has enjoyed incredible success over a short period of time, and it is clear from these figures that our fans’ appetite for close and unpredictable racing is only getting stronger,” underlined Aarti Dabas, Chief Media Officer of Formula E.

He noted that the tournament’s focus is now on continuing to strengthen free-to-air coverage of the championship for the coming seasons and on working with media partners to continually improve location, promotion and visibility of Formula E across different platforms and markets.

The 8th campaign will start on January 2022, with a combined total of 16 races in 12 locations. After kicking off in Saudi Arabia, the World Cup will travel to Mexico City, Cape Town, China, Rome, Monaco, Berlin and Vancouver, Canada next July 2022.
