The Environmental Strategy at FIA Obtains ISO Certification and Achieves Carbon Neutrality

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) announced that it has become carbon neutral by receiving ISO 14001: 2015 certification, in line with both its commitment to manage and reduce the environmental impact from its activities.

As detailed by the governing body of motorsport on Twitter, in order to comply with the Paris Agreement, they implemented a plan to reduce emissions by 20% by 2025, and 50% by 2030.

ISO 14001: 2015 establishes standards for effective environmental management, helps organizations to identify, manage, monitor and control their environmental performance.

It is based on three pillars: reduction of harmful effects on the environment caused by their activities; compliance with applicable regulatory requirements; and continual improvement of their environmental performance.

Sustainable Initiatives

FIA fully offset its 2020 carbon footprint by investing in projects enabling the organization to become carbon neutral this year.

The programs are spread across three continents (South America, Africa and Asia) and meet the strictest international standards. The investment involves forest conservation and restoration, as well as avoidance projects that enable the generation of renewable energy, benefiting biodiversity, local communities and having a positive economic impact in developing countries.

The Federation established a dedicated Environment and Sustainability Commission on 2017, chaired by former Mexican President Felipe Calderon, and joined the United Nations Framework for Sport for Climate Action (UNFCCC) in 2019.

“Measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions is a great achievement by the FIA that demonstrates its commitment to the environment. More than an end, this is the beginning of our journey to join everyone else’s efforts to address climate change and achieve a better planet,” said Calderón.

FIA President Jean Todt said that with ambitious goals, the institution is determined to tackle the challenge of climate change and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future for all.

“Achieving carbon neutrality and obtaining ISO 14001 certification shows that we are on time, on the right track. By reducing the environmental impacts of its activities and continuing to lead in sustainable innovation, the FIA is assuming its responsibility to move motorsport and mobility towards a low-carbon future,” he stressed.
