After the success of the E-Prix held in Puebla, Mexico, Formula E has the country as one of the favorite places to continue bringing interesting electric races to that destination.

This was stated by the regional director of the category, Alvaro Buenaventura, noting that the international racetrack Miguel Abed, more than met the challenge after the suspension in Mexico City due to the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For us, Mexico is one of the strongholds of the calendar, it is one of our star dates and it is one of the favorite countries of Formula E. Whether it is Puebla, Mexico City or another city in the country, the goal is to keep coming to Mexico,” he said.

The manager assured that the Mexican fans are an important factor in defining the calendar. “We have a very important fan base in this country. There is a culture of motorsport, especially now seeing how the Formula 1 driver, Checo Pérez, raises passions.  It is a priority to continue coming to Mexico for Formula E.”

A family legacy

Buenaventura explained that the choice of the track located in Puebla was made in part by family ties. “The Abed family is from Puebla. José Abed is the vice president of the International Automobile Federation and Jorge, his son, is the director of the National Association”.

Despite the success of the E-Prix, he made it clear that Mexico City remains a priority in planning. “For us, the Hermanos Rodríguez racetrack fulfills all the good things of being in the center of the country and having incredible facilities. If we went to Mexico City, we would continue with the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome without any doubt,” Buenaventura said.

For his part, the CEO of Formula E, Alberto Longo, declared that “I would be delighted to have the dilemma of choosing between Mexico City and Puebla, but this year will be the only exception we make. In the future if Puebla could give us the city center for a race obviously we will look at it with a lot of affection.”

“I will announce the 2022 calendar in about 15 days, so there is no time to form a non-permanent circuit in Puebla, but in the future let’s see what can happen, since new cars and new race formats are coming and there we will study all of them the options,” he added.

The weekend’s race in Puebla ended with the victory of the Swiss driver Edoardo Mortara for ROKiT Venturi Racing.
