Spain to Return to Formula E Drivers’ Grid

Spain to Return to Formula E Drivers’ Grid

It is striking that Formula E, the category founded by Spaniards Alejandro Agag and Alberto Longo, does not have a fixed presence of drivers from that country, nor does it have a stop in the series calendar.

However, the Iberians are gradually gaining ground in the electric single-seater category with the arrival of a brand such as Cupra, which has partnered with ABT, and the possibility of holding a race in Malaga in 2024.

In the field of racers, Roberto Merhi will represent Spain in Formula E after eight years of absence, since only Jaime Alguersuari, Oriol Serviá and Antonio García were the country’s flag bearers sporadically in the first campaign.

The Jakarta Double E-Prix, in Indonesia, to be held next weekend, will be the stage for Merhi to compete with Mahindra, after showing his skills in the rookie test held in Berlin.

The Spaniard will replace Oliver Rowland, a brand new signing for this season from Nissan, in the #11 M9Electro and will pair up with the 2016-17 Season Champion, Brazilian Lucas di Grassi.

“It is a great honor for me to represent Mahindra at the Jakarta races. I am very grateful for the opportunity and I am determined to make the most of it. I was able to drive the M9Electro at the rookie test in Berlin, but Formula E is totally different from all the competitions I’ve driven in, so I have a lot to learn. But I feel ready, as well as excited about the challenge,” he said.

Formula E will be a totally new experience for Merhi after having been involved in multiple motorsport disciplines, from Formula 1 to the most recent, the Japanese Super GT, passing through, for example, Endurance.
