Seaffinity: The Streamlined Yacht Powered by a Hydrogen Fuel Cell

A new creation hits the seas. The shipping industry continues to take an interesting course regarding the manufacture of novel vessels that not only have a welcoming design, but are also powered by environmentally friendly technologies.

On this occasion, it was the French-based studio, VPLP Design, that unveiled a super streamlined 45-meter trimaran concept called “Seaffinity,” inspired by seabirds.

The aluminum vehicle, which the studio describes as a “yacht of the future,” features a hybrid electric-powered engine generated by a hydrogen fuel cell. However, the main source of Seaffinity’s propulsion will be wind captured by two Oceanwing sails of 2690 square feet each, which harness the air for clean and efficient sailing.

Under the guidance of leading yacht designer, Patrick le Quément, the vessel’s monolithic form was inspired by the lightness, fluidity and beauty of the seagull. VPLP notes that there is an almost total fusion between the two hulls and the boat’s roof that results in a bird-like aerodynamic silhouette.

Features

The minimalist interior features intentionally pared-down colors to focus the sailing experience on the exterior. The design studio details that “the ambiance counts more than the décor elements. We didn’t want to create a piece that would stand out between the spectacle of the sea and us.”

In addition, they stress that the goal was to offer clients their vision of a new concept of a boat, more in harmony with nature and the environment. VPLP did not provide figures on speed or range, but said the multihull would be partially autonomous.

On board, the Seaffininty features a 55-foot beam and a generous living area distinguished by a limited color palette and subtle furnishings maintaining a focus on the outdoors. At the stern, there is a sizable deck with sunbeds, a swim platform and snorkeling facilities.

The design firm noted that the boat is aimed at new clients who are not interested in polluting consequences of traditional yacht offerings.

Seaffininty joins a flock of new trimarans that have hit the market in recent years. For example, McConaghy Boats introduced the 153-foot razorback Adastra in 2012, before following up with the 153-foot silver-bullet MC155 in 2017.
