Russian Minister of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov, announced the first hydrogen battery-powered car of the Aurus series to be delivered by 2024.

The minister said that, currently, it is a hybrid car with a 100 horsepower electric motor, and the intention is to use the most powerful batteries for such vehicles, combined with hydrogen batteries.

“By 2024, we are planning to manufacture a serial production model that will be available on the market,” Manturov stressed. At the unveiling of the first hydrogen-powered prototype designs, the public was able to see part of this innovation.

According to the manufacturer, the Russian Central Institute of Automotive Scientific Research and Automotive Engines (NAMI), the car will be able to accelerate up to 100 kilometers per hour in 6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour.

Extensive Testing

Through an official statement, Aurus explained that this is one of the first prototypes being tested. “We are proving the capabilities of the hydrogen platform, as it will be operated in the future.”

They specify that the current version of the Aurus Hydrogen model has a range of up to 600 kilometers, while emphasizing that it has zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and drives quietly and smoothly.

The basic version of the car used to transport President Vladimir Putin will cost 18 million rubles, about $274,000.

About Aurus

One of Russia’s leading luxury car brands, the company has a limousine, a sedan, a minivan and an SUV as part of its line-up. The state investment on the project reached 12.4 billion rubles (almost $170.3 million).

Along with NAMI, with a 63.5 percent stake on Aurus, its other shareholders are the United Arab Emirates’ Tawazun Strategic Development Fund, with 36 percent, and the Russian automaker Sollers with 0.5 percent.
