Quark: The Lightweight Electric Motor Capable of Generating Unprecedented Power

Electric car manufacturers are increasingly diversifying their innovations and not only limiting themselves to making luxurious models, but also venturing into battery and engine development.

In this case, the Swedish firm Koenigsegg drew the mobility world’s attention with the unveiling of a motor capable of generating great power while weighing less than 30 kilograms (kg).

This is the Quark, an electrified machine and pioneer of the LUN axial flux type, whose difference with radial flux is that the magnetic field that produces the movement of the motor is parallel to the axis of rotation instead of perpendicular.

Its name, which refers to the elementary particle of matter, which is indivisible and the only one to experience all four fundamental forces: electromagnetism, gravitation, strong interaction and weak interaction.

Koenigsegg revealed another unprecedented solution for equipping electric cars, which could transcend to other brands. The Terrier is a propulsion unit made up of two Quark modules and a six-phase David inverter (three for each Quark), which provides 1300 amperes of alternating current.

This is an unprecedented technology, as no mechanics have ever achieved similar performance. The power-to-weight ratio of Koenigsegg’s new Quark surpasses anything known (0.088 kg/hp).

Installed in the Brand’s New Car

The Quark engines will make their debut on the upcoming Koenigsegg Gemera hybrid, which will conceal a total of three 100% electric motors together with a three-cylinder propellant to offer 1,700 hp of power. The model, according to the Swedish manufacturer, will be a kind of unusual super-hybrid that focuses more on the electric part than on its thermal engine thanks to the lightness and compact size of these innovative Raxial Flux engines.

The main advantage is that it achieves significant weight savings, because it has to contain less materials such as copper.

Despite being implemented in the first instance in the Gemera model, Koenigsegg will also offer it to third parties, and that this engine is suitable for use in the nautical or aerospace industry, such as eVTOL vehicles.
