Formula E teams are preparing with great anticipation for the third generation (Gen3) of the electric single-seater series, scheduled for 2023. Porsche, one of the most iconic brands in the competition, presented its new car for the new stage of the competition in style.

Weissach, Stuttgar, was the scene of the car’s unveiling, on the test track of the Porsche Development Center, where the official driver, Pascal Wehrlein took the first laps in the vehicle.

According to the Formula E promoters’ description, the Gen3s are the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric racing cars ever built.

Designed specifically for urban circuits, they also take a big step forward in sustainability. More than 40% of the energy used during a race is produced through regenerative braking. The recycled carbon fiber used in the construction of the bodywork comes in part from this season’s Gen2 cars.

In addition, the Gen3 vehicle is the first formula race car with a front and rear powertrain. The new front powertrain adds 250kW to the 350kW at the rear, more than doubling the regenerative capacity of the current Gen2 car to a total of 600kW.

Charging time has also decreased significantly. The new ultra-high-speed charging capacity of 600kW represents almost double the power of the world’s most advanced commercial chargers.

Yesterday was an exciting day at the Porsche development center in Weissach.

Motivation in the team

Porsche works driver Pascal Wehrlein said that unveiling the Gen3 car and driving it for the first time was an incredible experience: “It felt great and I’m excited to test it at full power soon. My initial impressions were also very good and made me want more.”

For his part, Formula E Factory Motorsport Director Florian Modlinger emphasized that they have taken the first step into the Gen3 era with the successful launch on the test track at the development center.

“I want to thank the team for their hard work to make this possible. It was a lot of technological and operational work to get our new car out on track for season 9 and drive the first miles. Now we are looking forward to the coming days and weeks and continuing to make progress with the car. We will work to better align the systems and then the performance of the car,” he said.

It should be noted that TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E is currently contesting its third season with the Porsche 99X Electric. With a historic double thanks to Pascal Wehrlein and André Lotterer, the team celebrated its biggest success to date in Mexico on February 12, 2022.
