A picture worth a thousand words. So they say, and it may be true, especially in motorsport when a photographer manages to capture a moment of intense battle, struggle or adrenaline, either between two vehicles fighting each other, or by an accident portrayed at the ideal moment. That’s exactly the work of Sam Bloxham at Extreme E.

He is part of the Motorsport Images (MI) Team and has been dedicated to transmitting emotions through his lens in different categories. Formula 1 and Formula E are part of his repertoire, however, when the opportunity came to cover electric off-roaders, an entirely different experience bequeathed into his life.

“Shooting Extreme E has been so much fun, arduous and challenging at the same time! I’ve shot all forms of circuit racing in my time with MI, so capturing cars flinging sand, flying through the air and bouncing around spectacular environments has been fantastic,” Bloxham stated.

Extreme E Through a Lens

One of the toughest jobs for him has been walking on sand given that circuits are much longer than in other categories, and keeping his equipment neat and tidy is critical to getting great shots capable of conveying emotions to describe the action without wondering what’s going on.

Meanwhile, one of the most interesting challenges has been getting the images out in real time so that media outlets can get their hands on them as quickly as possible. Although, Bloxham assured that both in Saudi Arabia and Senegal they had no problem with the mobile data signal, in Greenland, things were a bit difficult for them, but at the end of the day everything worked as it should.

The 100% electric rally category has broken all the expected numbers on its first season, where after three X Prix, the excitement of the championship tackles multiple sectors of the world, followed by the transmission of its important message about climate change and its consequences, but best of all, the creation of awareness and proposals development providing timely solutions, and those features have been recognized by the team of photographers as something really positive.

“I think it’s great that they are trying to raise awareness about climate issues or challenges facing these areas. We help with this by shooting not only races, but also the legacy programs that Extreme E activates at each location, telling those stories demands images to really get the message across,” he concluded.
