Technology companies and major automotive manufacturers have set themselves the ambitious goal of producing batteries capable of generating 1,000 kilometers (km) of autonomy in electric vehicles.

One of them is China-based startup Gotion High Tech, a Volkswagen supplier, which presented its new L600 LMFP Astroinno battery at its annual technology conference and said that mass production will begin in 2024.

According to the company, the LMFP (lithium-manganese-iron-phosphate) battery has already passed all necessary safety tests and has a life cycle of 4,000 charge and discharge cycles, making it suitable for everyday electric cars.

The 1,000 km power on a single charge gives the battery a potential service life of 4 million kilometers, far exceeding the average service life of a car.

Its power on a single charge is also equivalent to records set by customized electric prototypes, such as the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX that broke a record by traveling from Germany to the UK on a single charge last year.

Dr. Cheng Qian, Executive President of Gotion High-Tech‘s International Business Unit, explained that in recent years, LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology has regained market recognition with a market share that continues to grow.

He detailed that in turn, the growth of the energy density of mass-produced LFP batteries has faced obstacles, and further improvement requires an upgrade of the chemistry system, so they developed that system.

The company also made other advances with the battery design, which reduced the number of structural parts by 45% and its weight by nearly a third.

The Asian company has not provided details on which vehicles the battery will be installed in for the first time, although it is planning a US$2.3 billion battery factory in the US.
