Fresh from a season in Formula 2 with BWT Arden, Maximilian Guenther made his Formula E debut with Dragon after serving as the team’s reserve driver in the 2017/18 season.

Before joining the championship full-time a year later with BMW i Andretti Motorsport, the German took part in the Formula E Marrakech Rookie Test in 2018.

Mixed curriculum

Born in Oberstdorf in 1997, Guenther began his racing career in karting at the age of 10. After three years, the German driver entered the world of open wheel racing in 2011 for the Formula BMW Talent Cup.

In 2013, Guenther competed in ADAC Formel Masters of ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. and was second in the season. In 2015, Guenther made his F3 Euroseries debut with Mucke Motorsport before joining Prema Powerteam in 2016 and 2017.

In 2017, he finished in a respectable fifth place on the Macau Grand Prix street test circuit before moving on to Formula 2 in 2018 with BWT Arden.

Formula E

After serving as a test and reserve pilot, Guenther competed in 10 E-Prixes with Dragon during his first campaign in 2018/19. He finished 17th in the drivers’ championship and the pilot also impressed with two Super Pole appearances.

BMW i Andretti Motorsport took the young Bavarian full-time in season 6. That year Guenther outpointed his then-teammate Alex Sims in the drivers’ championship.

He finished ninth, with big wins at Santiago and in round 8 at Tempelhof. The German’s four unsuccessful finals, including losing a podium in Diriyah for overtaking while the safety car was on the track, complicated his decisive position in the final, but thanks to his impressive performances he had a second chance with the BMW manufacturers team in season 7, the first Formula E campaign with the FIA world championship title.
