Through certified projects and strategies to leave a sustainable legacy in each of the regions it visits, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship became the first sport on a global scale with a net zero carbon footprint from its inception in 2020.
As a signatory and following the UN Climate Neutral Now initiative, the electric series manages its carbon footprint through three key steps: effectively measuring carbon output, prioritizing the reduction of the championship’s footprint and offsetting the remaining unavoidable emissions.
Since its inaugural season, Formula E has worked with Quantis, carbon footprint experts, to conduct a life cycle assessment that is used to monitor and calculate the championship’s carbon footprint.

Data Management
The Life Cycle Assessment is a tool used to comprehensively assess the environmental, social and economic impacts of the entire championship.
Formula E monitors these impacts at each race and reports them each season in order to identify opportunities for further improvements in operations and planning.
In that regard, the category reported that its overall emissions for Season 8 reached 33,800 tons of CO2 equivalent, a 24% reduction compared to the Season 5 baseline.
Formula E has managed to have a considerable impact on reducing overall emissions in Season 8 versus the Season 5 baseline despite a significant increase in the number of races on the calendar.

Formula E’s Sustainability Program is based on three pillars: the delivery of sustainable events, a significant positive impact in each host city, and the use of its global platform to promote electric cars and the role they will play in addressing air pollution.
From optimizing transportation and logistics, to expanding end-of-life options for lithium-ion battery cells and cutting single-use plastics on site, the championship’s drive for sustainable practices has led to Formula E becoming the first and only motorsport category to receive ISO 20121 third-party certification, the international standard for sustainability at events.
