Formula E returns this weekend to the tracks with an interesting spice to mark the future of the competition. As part of the Monaco E-Prix, the electric single-seater series will unveil to the world the third-generation (Gen3) car, scheduled to debut in season 9.

It is the fifth time out of eight seasons that the Principality is part of the category, a circuit offering a spectacle of overtaking in corners and breathtaking views for the fans.

DS TECHEETAH driver Antonio Felix Da Costa claimed victory in 2021 during one of the most thrilling races in Formula E history, capping a first outing on the track with a daring overtake at the end of the tunnel on the final lap of the competition to take the win.

The day saw an impressive 28 overtakes between the top six runners alone, with the lead changing hands six times. The 2021 track incorporated a modified chicane at T11, which will disappear this year to make way for the stage design to return to that of the traditional Circuit de Monaco.

How is the Tournament Going?

DS TECHEETAH driver Jean-Éric Vergne leads the standings in the World Drivers’ Championship on the road to Monaco after an outstanding weekend in Rome, where he finished second in Round 5.

The Frenchman is the only two-time Formula E champion and the only driver this season to have scored points in every race so far. Although he left Rome claiming that he could and should have taken more out of the double header in the Italian capital, he has to be happy with the start he has made this season.

Vergne already knows what it’s like to win in the Principality after achieving it in 2019, and hopes his experience on the Monegasque streets will help him gain ground in the busy schedule heading into the second half of the campaign.

Just two points back is Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns. The Dutchman has three podiums to his credit, more than any other driver, and has been as fast as anyone in the early rounds this season.

Stoffel Vandoorne is another two units behind Frijns in third place, with Mercedes-EQ leading the world team championship, although reigning champion Nyck de Vries has not shown his full quality so far.

Jaguar Racing, meanwhile, enjoyed an unprecedented weekend in Rome after Mitch Evans’ double took the team to fourth place in the standings.

The Gen3 Car

This April 28, two days before the party in Monaco, the all-electric Gen3 Formula E race car will be unveiled at the Yacht Club. The car, ready to race from season 9 onwards, will be officially unveiled to the world at a special event for manufacturers, teams, drivers, partners and VIP guests. Fans will be able to experience the show through the championship’s digital channels and get an in-depth first look.

Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E, stated that the vehicle represents a leap forward for motorsport and electric mobility. “Designed to demonstrate that high performance, efficiency and sustainability can be combined without compromise, the Gen3 car is the most powerful.”

“We look forward to finally taking the covers off the Gen3 in Monaco, a place steeped in motorsport history, and seeing the car light up the streets of cities around the world next season,” added Reigle.
