Germany Builds the Most Powerful Motor in the World Today

Together with the battery, the motor forms the most important pair of all the components required by an electric vehicle. Efficiency, range and performance depend on it.

The aim of the latest advances to consolidate electromobility and the longed-for energy transition sought by major manufacturers worldwide is to reduce costs, use lighter materials in the construction of motors, optimize performance according to use or learn to better manage the use of batteries.

One of the technology companies that presented a preview of its research is the German company Mahle, specialized in providing automotive equipment, which has just unveiled the Superior Continuous Torque (SCT) electric motor, which can operate indefinitely with high performance, ensuring that it is the most durable of today.

Features

Mahle’s machine is designed in such a way that it is particularly efficient at a certain rpm range. Despite its very compact and lightweight design, its continuous output – the rated output – is more than 90% of its maximum output – the peak output. This allows its application even in the most demanding conditions, such as a truck that needs to climb mountain passes or a passenger transport vehicle.

The Germans explain that the technology implemented in the engine is none other than an integrated oil cooling system, which not only makes it more robust, but also allows the waste heat generated to be used in the entire vehicle system.

Another advantage is that they manage to equip it in a smaller and lighter propellant that considerably reduces manufacturing costs, while increasing the load that commercial vehicles can carry.

Mahle’s Corporate Vice President of Research and Advanced Engineering, Martin Berger, explained that it is not complicated to build large electric motors that deliver high performance in the short term. However, what was still missing on the market until now were durable but compact units to make unrestricted electric vehicles for everyday use. “Our new SCT electric motor is the solution,” he said.

The company stresses that in making the machine they opted for what is known as a permanent excitation motor, as it allows for a very compact design and makes the motor efficient without wear and tear. For this, they used neodymium magnets, which are currently the strongest permanent magnets that can be manufactured, and Mahle uses them to generate the magnetic field of the motor.
