Formula E’s competitive nature has been accompanied in almost a decade of history by its sustainable goal to leave a legacy for the next generations from the beautiful sporting arena.

This time around, the electric single-seater series is once again at the forefront with a new broadcast production facility in London that offers state-of-the-art coverage and also reduces the environmental impact typical of major international live TV sporting events.

Starting this season, the live international race broadcast distributed to more than 40 broadcasters and broadcast in more than 150 countries will be produced remotely from The Production Center in London, a new state-of-the-art production facility developed by Gravity Media and located at the same address as the former BBC Television Centre in White City.

State-of-the-art Technology

The innovative production set-up allows for seamless remote integration of playback, audio and graphics into the live program output, as well as a resilient disaster recovery system to ensure that the broadcast remains uninterrupted in the event of technical difficulties.

A new multi-year partnership with Gravity Media, the leading media and broadcasting company, along with Formula E’s existing publishing partner, Aurora Media Worldwide, means that live broadcasting of international Formula E races will take place at the large complex in the English capital.

Live broadcast coverage of an international sporting event is often an environmentally intensive process with staff and equipment traveling by air. Centralizing the majority of live editing and production in the 50,000 square foot facility in London significantly reduces the impact of staff travel and the shipment of heavy production equipment.

Formula E has developed an on-board camera system installed in each race car with live team radio broadcasting that is considered best-in-class in the motorsport industry.

Sustainable Experience

Aarti Dabas, Formula E’s Media Director, explained that as the world’s first net zero carbon sport since its inception, there are ongoing challenges to show how delivering world-class sporting entertainment and maintaining industry-leading sustainable practices can co-exist without compromise.

“Our technology and broadcast teams have worked closely with Gravity Media and Aurora Media Worldwide to help us achieve this,” he said.

“The London-based facility and new approach to presenting Formula E coverage helps us stay true to our vision of accelerating human progress and encouraging the adoption of EV transportation while entertaining millions of viewers around the world,” Dabas pointed out.
