After unveiling a portentous car, changing the format and revamping its image, Formula E unveiled the new trophy that will be awarded to the champions of season 9, the first of the technological Gen3 era.

London-based studio Beta Design Office tailored the scepter to coincide with the debut of the series’ new Gen3, the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built.

The new trophy’s energy blast-like design is heavily inspired by the power characteristics of the Gen3, the third generation of Formula E racing cars on the edge of innovation and pushing the boundaries of EV technology development.

The first open-wheel electric race car to break 200 mph, the Gen3 acts as a power plant on wheels, generating more than 40% of the energy used in the race, and more than doubling the regenerative capacity of the previous Gen2 car to 600kW.

Design Vision

As detailed by Formula E on its official website, the goal was to create a new iconic trophy that would convey electrification, speed and motion, while retaining elegance and modernity.

The trophy consists of 44 fins: 22 large fins represent the drivers in competition, and 22 smaller fins refer to their cars on the track.

The shape of the structure is inspired by the spokes, heat sinks and automotive cores inside a power cable, combined with flowing lines seen in automotive body panels.

Anodized aluminum was chosen as the primary material for its lightweight and rigid qualities, which also allowed for a precise gold and silver color match.

Amidst the tailoring, it was critical that the end result felt high-end and premium in keeping with the FIA World Championship status.

Brand Projection

Henry Chilcott, Formula E’s Marketing Director, explained that one of the goals was to impact and boost the category with brand identity.

“The trophy speaks to our sport’s role as a powerful catalyst for change, while capturing the excitement and speed of electric racing,” he said.
