Without having started season 9, Formula E is one step ahead consolidating its vision of the future and is already planning the next steps the category will take to consolidate its policy of bringing electric races to all corners of the world.

In this sense, the series informed on its official website that they signed an agreement with the authorities of Tokyo, Japan, to work towards holding a competition in the Japanese capital.

The Tokyo Governor, Yuriko Koike, and Jamie Reigle, Formula E CEO, met in an official ceremony to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the headquarters of the Metropolitan Government.

The agreement will see city authorities and Formula E work together with the aim of bringing a race to Tokyo in the spring of 2024, subject to FIA approval, in the area around Tokyo Big Sight, Japan’s largest international exhibition center.

Part of a State Policy

The potential arrival of Formula E in Tokyo is part of a program established by the regional government to promote the use of ZEVs (Zero Emission Vehicles) and achieve the goal of “Zero Emission Tokyo,” an environmentally advanced city that emits no CO2.

Following the pact, Reigle expressed his excitement about plans to bring the sporting spectacle to Tokyo. “Together we will work to bring a Formula E race to the city in 2024 in support of Zero Emission.”

“Tokyo is an iconic global city, recognized as an innovator in consumer technology, a leader in the automotive industry and a global cultural trendsetter. Formula E is delighted to partner with the Metropolitan Government,” he added.

Representatives of Nissan, one of the first teams to commit to the third generation (Gen3) era of Formula E, attended the meeting between category promoters and authorities.

The Japanese Team Managing Director, Tommaso Volpe, spoke about the team’s excitement at the prospect of the island joining the calendar for the first time starting in Season 10.

“We are very excited about this announcement from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Formula E. We are very excited about this announcement. As the first Japanese automaker to participate in the championship, we would be delighted to have an E-Prix in Tokyo in 2024,” he said.

Volpe also noted that from season 9 they will be competing as a team for the first time, following the acquisition of e.dams earlier this year, so it would be exciting to arrive with their own squad on home turf.
