FIM CEO: E-Xplorer World Cup is a Milestone between Sport and Sustainability

New events in motorsport will take place in 2022. The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) announced with fanfare the launch of the E-Xplorer World Cup.

The innovative competition seeks a balance between environmental sustainability and technological advances, in a time-based racing scenario and direct confrontation, where teams must include both male and female riders.

As part of the setup of this new challenge, Jorge Viegas, FIM President, praised the FIM’s role to ensure environmental protection in its tournaments, and stated that this is a new milestone for two-wheeled sport.

“The FIM has long been a leader and strong promoter of sustainable sport. Our environmental code is extensive and many others consider it a benchmark for event hosting,” said Viegas.

“Our ongoing and growing commitment to integrate electric motorcycles into our Championship has always been a natural route. However, the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup marks a significant moment in this important journey,” he emphasized.

Viegas added that the organization “is proud to be part of this exciting new project and will provide all the necessary support to ensure success, not only for the inaugural season, but also into the future, as electric power will become a major player in our sport.”

A Successful Blend

Competitions such as Formula E and Extreme E have shown the world that it is possible to shape an exciting motorsport tournament, while achieving a key environmental purpose.

For Extreme E specifically, not only takes impressive electric sports cars to climate change-stricken paradises, but also goes to villages with an unprecedented team to help eradicate pollution.

The E-Xplorer World Cup pursues a similar goal, setting out a series with both great sports ambition and a sense toward reducing emissions.

“We can see a trend towards electric motorsport and a fusion of sport and sustainability,” said Valentin Guyonnet, co-founder and director of the E-Xplorer.

“For us, the next step was to transfer this development to motorcycle racing. Besides setting up a test platform for electric two-wheelers, we want to change the current motorcycle perception and offer a global electric mobility solution not limited to cars.”

The E-Xplorer World Cup is scheduled to begin in 2022, but no information about its start date or official schedule has been released yet. The organizers pointed out backstage that COVID-19 pandemic is a major factor for shaping the new category’s path.
