Extreme E <\/strong>ha desarrollado un programa de conservaci\u00f3n y educaci\u00f3n ambiental llamado Legacy Programme<\/strong> con el objeto de dejar un impacto positivo en los lugares donde compite la categor\u00eda, as\u00ed como llevar a cabo soluciones que mejoren la estabilidad ambiental de cara al futuro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En la primera temporada se organiz\u00f3 una carrera en Senegal, donde se destac\u00f3 la importancia de los manglares<\/strong>. Pilotos y miembros de equipo se dedicaron a plantar gran cantidad de ellos<\/strong>, espec\u00edficamente para apoyar a Oceanium<\/strong>, la ONG local que llev\u00f3 a cabo el proyecto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senegal cuenta con 185.000 hect\u00e1reas de estuarios de manglares<\/strong> distribuidos entre las regiones de Casamance y Sine Saloum. Sin embargo, entre 1980 y 2000 han desaparecido de forma acelerada, perdiendo el 25% de ellos durante ese periodo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Por ello, Extreme E<\/strong> realiz\u00f3 el proyecto de reforestaci\u00f3n en cinco \u00e1reas que suman 60 hect\u00e1reas, equivalente a 112 campos de f\u00fatbol aproximadamente, y a pesar de no participar all\u00ed en la temporada 2, visit\u00f3 el pa\u00eds para ver el progreso de su accionar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Su importancia<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Los manglares<\/strong> son un tipo de vegetaci\u00f3n costera que se encuentra en zonas intermareales de agua salada, siendo valiosos por su biodiversidad y por los servicios ecosist\u00e9micos que proporcionan, figurando como elementos vitales para la conservaci\u00f3n de la biodiversidad marina, ya que son el hogar de una gran variedad de especies animales<\/strong> (crust\u00e1ceos, moluscos, peces y aves).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De igual manera, tienen relevancia para la protecci\u00f3n costera tras actuar como barreras naturales contra las olas y las mareas, lo que ayuda a proteger a las comunidades sobre da\u00f1os causados por las inundaciones y los huracanes, del mismo modo en que contribuyen a reducir la erosi\u00f3n del suelo tras retener el sedimento y los nutrientes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Por si fuera poco, son importantes para el ciclo del carbono gracias a su capacidad de almacenar grandes cantidades en sus ra\u00edces, hojas y troncos, figurando como elemento clave en la lucha contra el cambio clim\u00e1tico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adem\u00e1s, los manglares ayudan a purificar el agua<\/strong> al absorber los contaminantes y los nutrientes excesivos, mejorando la calidad de la misma y reduciendo la contaminaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
