Las bater\u00edas fabricadas con iones de litio conforman el coraz\u00f3n de veh\u00edculos el\u00e9ctricos y otras tecnolog\u00edas en auge. Estas presentan beneficios como mayor densidad energ\u00e9tica, menor tiempo de carga, baja p\u00e9rdida por autodescarga y densidad de potencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sin embargo, investigadores contin\u00faan en la b\u00fasqueda de perfeccionar esta tecnolog\u00eda para hacerlas m\u00e1s accesibles en el mercado. En ese orden de ideas, un grupo de cient\u00edficos del Instituto de Tecnolog\u00eda de Massachusetts (MIT) descubrieron que un equipo con m\u00e1s de 100 a\u00f1os de antig\u00fcedad podr\u00eda ser la clave para presentar otras innovaciones<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Se trata de las bater\u00edas de hierro-aire, inventadas en 1878, que tienen una densidad de energ\u00eda mucho mayor que las bater\u00edas de iones de litio por una fracci\u00f3n de su costo, pero no eran pr\u00e1cticas para recargar debido a que se oxidan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los cient\u00edficos han superado esta falla a trav\u00e9s de un proceso denominado \u201coxidaci\u00f3n inversa\u201d que permite al nuevo dise\u00f1o cargar y descargar energ\u00eda. El m\u00e9todo permite a la bater\u00eda de hierro-aire brindar 100 horas de electricidad limpia con un costo de $20 kilovatios por hora, comparados con los $200 por kilovatios hora de las bater\u00edas de iones de litio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una opci\u00f3n para combatir el cambio clim\u00e1tico<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Si bien es cierto que las bater\u00edas de iones de litio est\u00e1n bien afianzadas en el mercado de veh\u00edculos el\u00e9ctricos, estos equipos de vieja data pueden actuar como una alternativa para reducir los costos y mejorar a\u00fan m\u00e1s su impacto en el medio ambiente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet-Ming Chiang, profesor de electroqu\u00edmica en el MIT a Popular Science, se\u00f1al\u00f3 que la producci\u00f3n comercial de bater\u00edas de hierro-aire puede aumentarse para el almacenamiento de energ\u00eda y ayudar a mitigar el cambio clim\u00e1tico para mediados de siglo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
