The Drone Racing League (DRL), a worldwide professional racing championship, has announced an alliance that promises major technological breakthroughs.

It is a wide-ranging partnership with T-Mobile that aims to advance on the 5G drone technical platform. Accordingly, the two brands launched their first 5G-enabled drone. This is one of the first racing vehicles in the world with an integrated module capable of transmitting live video directly to the Internet.

The drone will put sports fans closer than ever to the action, transmitting high-definition first-person competition (FPV) footage to broadcasters via T-Mobile’s 5G wireless network, the largest, fastest and most reliable in the United States.

First Venture

This week, the drone took off for its first public flight at the MLB “At Field of Dreams” event, presented by GEICO in Dyersville, Iowa, sponsored by T-Mobile.

The expedition provided baseball fans with unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the iconic stadium, and first-person-view movie site, captured via the 5G network in high-definition.

The 5G drone took fans on a flight through the cornfields to the movie set to see the original home and field, then to the Major League Baseball field where the highly anticipated show was staged.

“Drones are one of the most compelling use cases for 5G and we are working toward a future where all drones will eventually be connected to 5G. That’s why we’ve partnered with DRL to drive this innovation,” said Neville Ray, Technology President at T-Mobile.

“With the 5G network power of T-Mobile, we’re empowering innovative projects to completely reinvent every industry and customer experience, from sports entertainment to disaster recovery, package delivery and more.”

Rachel Jacobson, CEO of the Drone Racing League, noted that the competition “is a perfect case study to showcase the benefits of T-Mobile 5G wireless technology with our high-speed racing drones.”

“Our fans love innovation, and discovering how new technology is developing, and we know our 5G-enabled drone will do just that. Our goal is to get them excited about the new ways they will be experiencing the thrill of professional racing,” he added.

Other Expeditions and Technical Details

The DRL expects that during its 2021-2022 season, the magenta 5G drone will make flights at events alongside T-Mobile, capturing and sharing interesting content.

Prior to category events, the vehicle will fly around the field, filming exclusive previews of complex, three-dimensional race tracks for fans tuning in to the broadcast.

This new 5G-enabled device is designed to redefine sports entertainment, capturing exciting and crisp video footage.

The drone has a dual FPV and HD broadcast camera system, 5-second lipo battery configuration for extended flight time and over 2,400g of thrust, allowing it to capture incredible content across mile-long courses while flying at over 60 MPH. In its next phase of development, the 5G module will connect the drone’s command and control functions to enable flight over T-Mobile 5G.
