Every late summer, more than 700,000 spectators converge on the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. Over two weeks of elite competition, the grounds generate a staggering volume of waste: discarded drink cups, concessions packaging, merchandise wraps, and roughly 70,000 pressurized tennis balls cycled out after just a few games of play. In response, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) has positioned its flagship tournament as a testing ground for venue-scale circularity, targeting net-zero operational waste to landfills.
The initiative offers a critical benchmark for international racket sports, exposing both the power of closed-loop venue logistics and the structural hurdles that persist at major sporting spectacles.
The frontline of the US Open’s waste diversion effort targets food and beverage service, traditionally the single largest contributor to tournament refuse. Through widespread front-of-house sorting stations, back-of-house compost separation, and partnerships with local organic waste processors, the USTA diverts metric tons of discarded food scraps away from regional landfills into industrial composting facilities. Unserved, prepared food from corporate suites and dining areas is systematically captured for local food rescue operations across Queens and the greater New York metropolitan area, addressing food waste at the source.
Yet the operational tension deepens when addressing high-turnover sports equipment. Standard pressurized tennis balls present an acute ecological bottleneck. Constructed from vulcanized rubber bonded tightly to a nylon-wool felt cover with chemical adhesives, conventional balls are virtually impossible to recycle through municipal mechanical recycling streams.
To prevent tens of thousands of tournament balls from entering local disposal streams, the USTA deploys closed-loop collection pipelines. Spent balls from practice sessions and tournament matches are collected and routed to specialized reprocessing partners, where the rubber cores are ground down to create cushioned footing layers for municipal playgrounds and refurbished public community courts.
The battle against single-use plastics remains the primary public-facing friction point. While aluminum cups and refilling stations have proliferated across the grounds to replace traditional plastic beverage containers, high fan throughput and cross-contamination in disposal bins continue to challenge operational recycling rates. The real test of modern sports circularity is not whether green initiatives look good on concourse signage, but whether venue systems can enforce genuine end-of-life recovery at scale.
As Grand Slam tournaments face increasing scrutiny over their broader carbon footprints, the US Open’s ongoing zero-waste framework demonstrates that large-scale diversion is technically feasible. However, until manufacturers redesign the foundational materials of tennis equipment itself, venue-level circularity will remain an uphill, mitigation-first effort rather than a closed loop.
