Alejandro Agag Celebrated at Reuters Global Energy Transition Awards

Alejandro Agag, the visionary founder behind Extreme E, the upcoming Extreme H championship, Formula E, and the E1 Series, was Highly Commended in the prestigious Transition Advocator category at the 2025 Reuters Global Energy Transition Awards 2025, in New York’s Times Square.

The award, created as part of the hotly contested People of Purpose category, recognises individuals demonstrating exceptional dedication in promoting and facilitating the transition to net zero. Alejandro’s commendation highlights his long-term efforts to reimagine motorsport as a platform to accelerate the shift towards net zero and clean energy innovation.

From launching the world’s first all-electric racing series with Formula E in 2014, to more recently pioneering Extreme H, the first hydrogen racing championship, and also the world’s first all-electric race boat Championship in the E1 series, Agag has consistently utilised the power of sport to bring together governments, manufacturers, investors, and fans around the globe.

“To be recognised among the world’s leading energy transition advocates is a huge honour,” said Alejandro Agag. “I’ve always believed that sport has the power to inspire change, and through motorsport, we’ve created a platform that pushes sustainable technologies forward whilst entertaining and educating at the same time. This recognition is made possible by the entire ecosystem of staff, partners and suppliers, working hard behind the scenes to deliver innovation at speed.”

Under Agag’s leadership, the motorsport industry has become a test bed for clean energy innovation. Formula E helped spark a global EV revolution, and with Extreme E testing the technology in the harshest of conditions, electric car sales have grown from just 320,000 in 2014 to over 14 million annually. The Extreme E championship also broke new ground in environmental storytelling and technology development, introducing an industry-first Hydrogen Fuel Cell system for event operations, setting new sustainability blueprints for global sporting events to follow.

His most recent initiatives are the E1 Series, which sees E1 RaceBirds ‘fly’ thanks to electric propulsion combined with foil technology, and ExtremeH, launching in 2025 as the world’s first hydrogen-powered motorsport championship, both which aim to tackle emissions in some of the hardest to reach sectors: marine and heavy transport.

Extreme H, is an evolution of Extreme E and will get underway later this year as the FIA Extreme H World Cup. This shift toward clean energy technology will demonstrate how hydrogen can redefine motorsport, on and off the racecourse, pushing boundaries for sustainability in the automotive and energy industries.

Agag’s work continues to drive the global conversation around clean mobility, technological innovation, and cross-sector collaboration, all essential contributors to accelerating the global energy transition. Alejandro was also recently shortlisted for the TIME100 Climate list, as one of TIME’s Climate Leaders in Business for his work in sustainable motorsport.

The Reuters Global Energy Transition Awards took place in New York, during its flagship Global Energy Transition conference, which brings together the most influential voices shaping the future of energy.
