Mortara Slips Away from the Formula E Title

After taking a breather at the E-Prix of Marrakech, where he regained the lead in Formula E, Edoardo Mortara had two bad weekends in New York and London. By not performing well in both competitions, the Venturi representative recognizes that his options for the title are significantly reduced.

Specifically, last Saturday’s race in the British capital was a hard blow for the driver, who suffered an accident and left the race without points.

Mortara was caught in contact at the start of the race, getting caught between Jean-Eric Vergne and Sam Bird at Turn 2, which forced him to slightly collide with Bird twice to end the Jaguar driver’s race.

Speaking to Autosport, the Swiss noted that despite there still being mathematical chances the gap to leader Stofel Vandoorne is becoming complicated.

“It wasn’t the performance I expected. We were not competitive from the start,” he noted. Regarding the incident with Vergne, Mortara explained that the Frenchman “basically tried in a straight line at Turn 2 and made Sam and I retire. It’s frustrating, obviously, but you shouldn’t find yourself there in the first place.”

More Difficulties

As if the contact with Vergne and Bird wasn’t enough of a handicap, Mortara received a penalty while pitting for repairs, as his car’s ready-to-move status light was on while mechanics replaced the part on his car.

“I would say it’s still possible. Obviously we will try to do our best, but it doesn’t really look that good at the moment,” said the Venturi racer about his chances at the Formula E scepter.

With two rounds to go in Seoul, Mercedes driver Stofel Vandoorne is well positioned to lift the title, which would be the second in a row for the team and would bid farewell in style to the electric single-seater series after announcing they are leaving the circuit.
